    High Tide is a classic Legacy deck and in January I decided to try and build it in Highlander. Recent printings and watch-list cards Mission Briefing and Spellseeker are perfect for the archetype, and the de-pointing of Back to Basics gave the deck a free free-win. I also found that the deck could be built relatively cheaply, not necessarily needing cards like Candelabra of Tawnos or Timetwister.

    Like the Legacy version, this deck aims to survive until turns 4-6 via control cards such as counters, bounce, Counterbalance and Cryptic Command, and “go-off” when the time is right, either winning with Brain Freeze, or bouncing the opponent’s board with Temporal Fissure. The key mana engine of the deck are the 5 spells which untap lands, (Snap, Frantic Search, Turnabout, Time Spiral and Palinchron, the latter of which generates infinite mana and infinite Storm with 6 lands and 1 active High Tide, or 4 lands and 2 active High Tides). The deck contains 3 Instant/Sorcery Tutors and 5 cards which can rescue High Tide from the Graveyard, and contains Dream Halls as an alternative enabler, allowing the deck a combo win without High Tide. In spite of having only a few creatures, the deck wins a surprising amount of games via combat, especially post-board.

    My version has a partially transformative sideboard, containing a package of 6 cards to be brought in against Control to bounce their lands or counter their fetches, limiting their resources to interact with your combo. As an opposing Emrakul cuts off Brain Freeze as a win condition, Bribery is a tutorable game-winning spell to bring in against Emrakul decks.

    The deck is a lot of fun and a challenge to play, and for style points contains 55/75 old-card-frame (pre-8th Edition) cards. It should appeal to Control players looking to explore with Combo, as the Mono Islands mana-base and “land-go” plays create Control-style games. I am 5-5-1 with the deck across 3 events, and know that my lack of combo/storm experience cost my several games or more.

    I have a build from this deck I piloted a few years back at Highlander Nats (managed to scrub out in my win and in). Lost the list but I’ll try and rebuild and post it. Largest build difference that I can see is I also use a ghostly flicker engine, which is hilarious (infinite mind desire loops).

    I think the wish faerie is a potential inclusion, Not sure if will going to 1 and the recent island/swamp cards make a bubbling muck variant better, Worth exploring. Jar has gone in over pore over pages thanks to depointing.
