    PRIMER: GOBLIN TRIBAL

Goblins are a much-loved tribe which have largely been ousted from competitive Magic in recent years, partially due to a lack of playable new Goblins being printed. Modern and Legacy Goblin builds are extremely linear and trying to build mono-R Goblins in Highlander is difficult – the deck can be explosive but is very inconsistent and runs out of gas. I built this BR version in 2015, and it recruits some non-Goblin critters to help out, eschewing almost all of the Goblins played in Legacy (that’s right, no Lackey, Piledriver, Warchief, Ringleader, Prospector or Matron!). The deck can play tempo-oriented or grindy, and contains lock-pieces and flexible answers, but like traditional Goblins the deck’s main weapon is to go wider, especially with tokens. Match-up wise, the deck fares strongest against traditional control decks like Kurgan, Esper and UR Moon, and has been strong against Elves and Zoo. 50-50ish match-ups would be green-based midrange decks and creature-based combo decks. With the lack of any interaction game 1 against Storm, it’s a rough match-up. I won a Melbourne Highlander League with this build in 2016 and have top 4’d several local tournaments. I believe this is the best method to making Goblins work in Highlander (but am happy to be proven wrong for the advancement of Goblins!)

Nice to see this archetype performing well! I was thrashed a while ago by a mono-Red Goblins deck and was impressed by the power of Lackey + Siege Gang Commander and other Legacy-type interactions. Is it a case that the BR version has more raw power and better cards due to the black splash, whereas the mono Red version is more linear like the Legacy build (and way worse against combo since it doesn’t have access to DITS)?

Open to anyone who can also add a Mono-R Goblins list too. Will rename this thread to Rb since there are black and non-black versions available (that play out differently of course) but the backbone of a goblin theme is what will tie the archetypes together in one thread.

Here is a list I’ve been playing with lately that is more in line with traditional Goblin builds from other formats – 4 new Goblins from 2018 boost this deck and the depointing of Wheel is just gravy. Sideboard is obviously very meta-dependent. As Sarven said, the explosiveness of the deck is surprising and turn 4 wins are relatively common.

I’ve been working on a budget R/B Goblins list that looks to be able to grind with midrange decks in my local meta and change gears to aggro out control/combo. Any feedback and suggestions would be appreciated.
